Program Description

The Graduate Counseling Professional Year (GCPY) program supports individuals who already hold a graduate degree in counseling (such as 91³Ô¹Ï’s own MS in Counseling or MA programs) but need additional coursework or credits to meet specific state licensure requirements. The length of the program is dependent on the number of credits needed to adhere to PA licensure education requirements.

The typical course of study includes 12-18 credits; however, it will be necessary to review each student’s transcripts to make a final determination.Ìý

This program allows 91³Ô¹Ï alumni and some other counseling program graduates to complete the necessary elements without pursuing a full new degree.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the Graduate Counseling Professional Year, the student will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  1. Advanced Clinical Competence: Demonstrate proficiency in clinical assessment, diagnosis, case conceptualization, and the delivery of evidence-based counseling interventions through supervised practicum and internship experiences, while integrating biblical principles and a Christian worldview.
  2. Professional Identity and Ethical Practice: Develop a strong professional counselor identity grounded in Christian values and apply advanced ethical, legal, and professional standards necessary for independent practice and state licensure eligibility.
  3. Assessment, Research, and Practice Integration: Apply advanced knowledge of psychological assessment techniques and research methods to inform effective, contextually sensitive, and biblically-informed clinical decision-making.

  • Graduates of 91³Ô¹Ï’s counseling programs (e.g., MS in Counseling, MA in Community Counseling, or MA in Counseling Ministry) whose prior degree lacks sufficient credits or specific required courses for licensure in their target state.
  • Graduates from other schools whose prior degree lacks sufficient credits or specific required courses for licensure in their target state AND who after consulting with their home state counselor board sign a waiver to pursue the 91³Ô¹Ï Graduate Counseling Professional Year program.Ìý

  • Statement of Purpose: This program is a significant time commitment. In 500 words, explain how you have evaluated your readiness to manage competing responsibilities and priorities while pursuing this degree, as well as how obtaining this degree aligns with your long-term goals.
  • Transcripts: Order official transcripts for all conferred degrees to be sent to 91³Ô¹Ï.

The Statement of Purpose and Transcript requests can be submitted via the the student portal once you submit the application.

FAQs

I completed my counseling degree at another institution. Can I complete the required courses for licensure at 91³Ô¹Ï?

It depends on the total number of credits and the conferral date of your existing degree.

  • If you have a conferred Master’s degree of 48+ credits: Yes. You may apply to our Professional Year courses to earn the remaining credits needed to reach the 60-credit licensure threshold. The Pennsylvania licensing board accepts multiple transcripts to meet the 60-credit requirement, provided your foundational degree was at least 48 credits (conferred after June 30, 2009).
  • If your conferred degree is fewer than 48 credits: No. The licensing board will not accept a “completion certificate” or “tacked-on” credits to bridge a degree that was below the 48-credit minimum. In this case, you would need to apply to a full degree program (such as our MA or MS in Counseling). Please note that university policy does not currently allow for the transfer of credits from a previously conferred degree toward a second degree.
  • Out-of-State Students: While Pennsylvania allows “split” credits between institutions for the 60-credit total, other states may not. If you are seeking licensure outside of Pennsylvania, we cannot guarantee that your state board will accept credits earned at multiple institutions. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the home state counselor board to ensure they would meet the educational requirements for licensure. Applicants will also need to after submitting the application.Ìý

Students pursuing the MA in Community Counseling can change their program to pursue MS in Counseling at any point by completing the program change form in the Registrar’s area of the website. Interviews with the Counseling faculty and adherence to the GPA requirements are required prior to admittance to the MS.

Students who graduate with an MA in Community Counseling can apply for the Graduate Counseling Professional Year program to complete the required credits for licensure.

The Graduate Counseling Professional Year can also be used for cases where the student completed a 91³Ô¹Ï Counseling program years ago and needs only certain credits. The application for admission is still required.Ìý

Students will earn the Post-Master’s Certificate in Professional Counseling upon completing the specific required core courses:

  • CSG 856Ìý– Research Methods & Program Evaluation
  • CSG 860Ìý– Professional Development Practicum
  • CSG 891Ìý– Professional Internship I

Professional licensure and certification requirements can vary by state and territory. Additional licensure requirements may include professional examinations, additional coursework, background checks, years of work experience, fingerprinting requirements, etc. Students who are considering a program that may allow them to pursue professional licensure in the state or territory where they are currently located or where they plan to locate in the future should review the state’s or territory’s information below and contact the appropriate licensing agency to seek information and additional guidance.

State licensure requirements are also subject to change. Students should always check with their state licensure board to confirm licensure requirements.

Do I need to take the biblical languages courses?

The MDiv program requires students pass a language proficiency test for Greek and Hebrew.Ìý Depending upon the results of the test, up to 12 additional credits of Greek and/or up to 12 additional credits of Hebrew may be required. The graduate Divinity Electives
may be used for this purpose.

Some are seeking a strong preparation in their field, while others are eager to ponder big questions and explore how faith informs every aspect of life and learning. The 91³Ô¹Ï Honors Program offers an environment for students who want both.

For students who love learning, value meaningful conversation, and desire in-depth study, the Honors Program provides an academic experience that is both challenging and formative. It invites students to engage ideas carefully and purse truth within a community guided by Scripture.

At its core, the Honors Program is about developing habits of thoughtful scholarship alongside a lifestyle of service. Central to this experience is the integration of all areas of students’ education, stretching them to think deeply while remaining grounded in a biblical understanding of truth.

A Distinctive Academic Experience

The Honors Program emphasizes the ongoing conversation between the Bible, great literature, and the ideas that have shaped the intellectual tradition. Through close reading and guided discussion, students develop the skills to analyze hard texts and engage in academic debate.

Rather than passive learning, students actively participate in discussion, analysis, and debate. This approach sharpens students’ reasoning skills and helps them develop strong oral and written arguments that serve them well in any major or career.Ìý

Dr. Adam Porcella, Director of the Honors Program and Provost at 91³Ô¹Ï, describes the vision behind the program:

“We must also commit to creating classroom environments that are both rigorous and relational—spaces where students can wrestle with hard questions, encounter new ideas, and receive encouragement andÌýdiscipleshipÌýfrom trusted mentors. When done well, this kind of education not only informs students but transforms them.”

Learning in the Honors Program Community

Community is a defining feature of the Honors experience. Students form close relationships with peers who share a love of learning and a desire to pursue truth. Invested faculty members play an active role in the program, mentoring students both inside and outside of the colloquium environment.

Throughout the year, students gather twice a month for shared meals and discussions. These gatherings, along with frequent cultural outings, create space for thoughtful dialogue and lasting friendships. The result is a learning environment where students can engage challenging ideas while growing personally and spiritually.

Mentorship and Integrated Scholarship

A hallmark of the Honors Program is the six-credit capstone project completed under the guidance of a faculty member. This project allows students from any major to pursue a topic that interests them and aligns with their academic and professional goals.

Through sustained research, writing, and mentorship, students learn how to integrate their studies and produce meaningful scholarly work. The project culminates in a formal presentation and critique, offering valuable preparation for graduate study, professional work, and lifelong learning. For many students, this experience becomes one of the most formative elements of their time at 91³Ô¹Ï.

In support of this work, the Honors Program includes an annually renewable $2,000 scholarship for participating students. This support reflects 91³Ô¹Ï’s commitment to making deep, academic study more accessible throughout a student’s undergraduate experience.

Advisors will meet with you to register for courses and give thoughtful academic advice, keeping you on track until graduation. In addition to academic advising, our Academic Resource Center (ARC) is equipped with support for students of all skill levels. 3. First Generation College Student Scholarship

Paying for college can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Ninety-seven percent of our undergraduate full-time students receive some form of financial assistance. Our Financial Aid team can help you explore grants, scholarships, and loans so you can focus less on the cost, and more on the calling God has placed before you. Plus, first-generation college students can apply for a $500 scholarship to help with things like books, equipment, or other first-semester essentials. The MA in Community Counseling aims to teach students biblical principles involved in understanding human behavior, their problems, and the process of change. No, the MA in Community Counseling program does notÌýlead to licensure. If you are looking for a program that leads to licensure, you may want to consider theÌýMS in Counseling program. You can, however, return to complete the third year of study and satisfy the required hours for licensure in states where the program has been approved.Ìý

These courses generally require students to be onsite only 3–4 times per semester, and those sessions are also held on Saturdays. There are also cases where two courses are offered on the same Saturday at different times or on alternating Saturdays.Ìý

This structure minimizes your weekly time on campus while still providing the hands-on training and in-person engagement.

Yes, the MA in Community Counseling can be completed 100% online in addition to onsite. This enables you to earn your degree while you work or care for your family from anywhere. Most courses are 7-weeks long and the program shares the same Christ-centered curriculum as onsite. Counseling simulation labs are 15-weeks long and are held weekly via synchronous sessions.

Courses typically contain seven units and are delivered in 7-week terms. Each unit contains 5-7 modular activities. Each learning activity includes instructional videos accompanied by reflections, quizzes, discussion forums and other assessments. Courses also utilize adaptive learning technologies such as Ìýfor long-term retention of concepts and video-threadsÌýfor enhanced collaboration.

At 91³Ô¹Ï, we believe that psychological and spiritual health centers on the restoration of a person’s relationships—with God and with our fellow man. Building on classroom learning, our students practice models and methods for effective counseling using intensive small-group training cohorts. We utilize these small groups not only to provide training, practice and feedback, but also enhance student’s growth in their relationship with Christ. We also focus on small group techniques for healing relationships through weekly labs with an intimate cohort of fellow believers preparing to serve the Great Reconciler, Jesus Christ.

While the tuition costs vary by program level, the rate is typically $425 per credit or 12K per year for A.A. and B.S. programs and $300-$725 per credit for graduate programs.Ìý

91³Ô¹Ï Online courses based on 91³Ô¹Ï’s 100+ years tradition of excellence in biblical education. Our on faculty has carefully designed them taking into consideration what works best for the online learner. The modular design and asynchronous delivery enable you to complete your studies while you pursue your career, ministry and spend time with your family.

Courses typically contain seven units and are delivered in 7-week terms*. Each unit contains 5-7 modular activities. Each learning activity includes instructional videos accompanied by reflections, quizzes, discussion forums and other assessments. Courses also utilize adaptive learning technologies such asÌýÌýfor long-term retention of concepts andÌýÌýfor enhanced collaboration.

The asynchronous delivery provides flexibility around your daily busy schedule. In most courses, interactive activities are typically due by Wednesday while the rest of the unit’s work is due by Sunday night. The MBA, M.A. in Music and Criminal Justice programs use theÌýÌýprocess and require the completion of certain activities daily to optimize learning.

Our own 91³Ô¹Ï faculty intentionally participate in the course throughout the week to provide you with an incarnational experience.

*Few capstone courses are intentionally offered in 14 weeks to optimize student learning.

A.A. programs usually take 2 years and B.S. and B.A. programs typically take 3-4 years to complete.

Graduate programs vary in length by program. As an example, 91³Ô¹Ï’s traditional MBA typically takes 20 months to complete but then there is also the accelerated One-Year MBA that you can complete in 12 months.

If you are looking to complete your program sooner, you can consider taking more 7-week courses at a time.Ìý

All courses are developed by one or more course developers and taught by our own faculty. The instructors are also intentionally involved in the course throughout the week by providing direction in the course activities, participating in the forum discussions, grading the student work and providing substantive feedback. Most courses also offer optional office hours weekly via Zoom or similar video conferencing tools.

Our instructional design team works very closely with the course developers and carefully plans the courses to balance the technology requirements. Most courses use the eLearning platform for hosting the course materials, Panopto for video capture and storage, VoiceThread for enhanced discussion forums, and Cerego for adaptive learning. Zoom is used at times for virtual office hours. These sessions are optional.

Except for the Hebrew and Greek language courses for the B.S. in Biblical Studies program, typically there are no required meeting times for the completing the course activities.ÌýÌý

The course transfer depends on where you are transferring from, and what program you are transferring to. If you are coming to 91³Ô¹Ï Online from another institution, it is very likely you will have some credits that will transfer. Because there are so many options, we encourage you to talk to an enrollment counselor. If you are transferring out, 91³Ô¹Ï is a regionally accreditedÌýschool and some credits should transfer with relative ease. Each college sets their own transfer criteria, so be sure to check their policies for specifics.

91³Ô¹Ï Online offers a variety of options for prior learning and experience. You can receive up to 6 credits for prior learning for graduate programs. At the discretion of the program advisor, three to six credits for prior learning (CPL) can be awarded for students with extensive background in areas addressed by specific courses. Additionally, advance standing may be granted for Bible or theology credits earned at an accredited Bible college, Christian liberal arts college or university, or seminary. Credits will be granted on a course by course basis.

91³Ô¹Ï is approved to offer financial aid because of its regional accreditation. There are many options available and typically students qualify for at least one type of federal aid. Many students receive scholarships and grants that make earning their degree even more affordable. 91³Ô¹Ï offers a variety of scholarships and discounts in addition to options for loans and grants.
