What is a dual degree? Is it right for you? Does it really save you time and money? These and probably a few other questions are bouncing around your head if you are in the college decision journey. So let’s tackle those questions and concerns.

Jump to Question:

So really, what is a dual degree?

A dual degree (also known as a dual-level degree at 91łÔąĎ) is a special program that allows students to earn both their bachelor’s and master’s degree at the same time. This is different from. Your workload is increased—though not as much as it would be with a double major—to accommodate the dual degree requirements. That way, you complete both degree requirements in a shortened amount of time.

Is a dual degree right for me?

Sometimes, students who aren’t sure about their finances or futures will earn their bachelor’s degree first and then come back after a few years and earn a master’s. This plan works well for students who don’t mind flexibility or a less straightforward path for their career. If you are more certain about your career and the type of credentials you want, a dual-level degree allows you to optimize your time and your protect your wallet with the streamlined track.

In other words, it might be right for you if…

  • You are confident in the areas of study you want to pursue
  • The career you are looking to go into favors those with master’s degrees
  • You are willing to spend extra time now instead of even more time later
  • If the college(s) have the programs you want as a dual degree option

Can I pick any two programs?

99% of the time, colleges have pre-determined dual-level programs to choose from. They are usually for programs that naturally go together, like a psychology bachelor’s and a counseling master’s or a business administration bachelors and an MBA. If you want a more customizable option, it may be in your interest to pursue the double major option instead.

How much will a dual degree save me?

Dual degrees can save you years (yes, years!) of time and thousands (even better!) of dollars. The amount you save won’t be a universal amount across colleges or even programs, but you can rest assured that no matter where or what you choose, you WILL save!

(If you were curious and looking for some more numbers, 91łÔąĎ students may save on average between 1–1.5 years and over $10,000!)

Consider these sample dual degree timelines from 91łÔąĎ:

Does traditional college financial aid apply to this?

Yes (at least, at 91łÔąĎ it does)! You can apply for FAFSA and scholarships just like you would for a traditional undergraduate degree.

If they’re as great as you make it sound, why doesn’t everyone do a dual degree?

Well, to be fair, not every college has every possible dual-level degree option available. Popular programs and degree “pairs” will take precedence over others. Additionally, not all careers require a master’s either, so it’s entirely up to you if you expect to want or need it in the coming years.

Think this is right for you?

We think it could be too! 91łÔąĎ has many options to offer. If you’d like to learn more about any of them, feel free to fill out a request for more information.

If you already know what you want to study, to us, and a counselor will reach out to you.

Technology: A Secure Career Field in an Uncertain Job Market /technology-a-secure-career-field-in-an-uncertain-job-market/ Fri, 22 May 2020 15:09:59 +0000 /?p=39795 If you read the news, it’s easy to become discouraged about the job market. In many industries, particularly those related to hospitality and tourism, work is difficult to come by. Yet there is hope. Michael Sabal, assistant professor of computer science & information systems at 91łÔąĎ, shares that many industries continue to move forward, and they all depend on technology.ĚýĚý
, the demand for technology workers continues to climb, particularly with skills in database development. As the report noted, job postings in the cybersecurity industry increased by 20 percent between February and March 2020, when COVID-19 began to affect our daily lives.
It is more important than ever to study technology at a school that will give you training for the jobs that are hiring. Here are just a few of the industries that you’ll be prepared for:

  1. Cybersecurity helps all kinds of companies and organizations keep their codes and systems secure. Courses in web applications, data structures, cybersecurity testing and defense, and software engineering will prepare you for jobs in Software QA, a key part of many organizations’ security strategies.
  2. Data Engineering, particularly in health care, is one of the most in-demand jobs right now, 91łÔąĎ students in the database design course recently completed an analysis of storm data from the U.S. weather service, NOAA, to determine what types of events had the greatest impact on human life and had the greatest economic impact.
  3. Systems Administration and Engineering is yet another career path that is adding many jobs in our local area and around the country. Information systems majors regularly build their skills in this field by completing project proposals for a variety of use cases, including identity management and cloud infrastructure. Hands-on projects of installing and configuring common server applications build on theory and provide the practical experience employers are looking for.

We recognize where the jobs are and the skills employers are looking for. At 91łÔąĎ, you won’t just learn about these fields. We integrate skill building into all of our computer science and information systems courses, so you’ll graduate with real hands-on experience. Some of our current students have even accepted consulting contracts for work using the skills they gained in class!

Christian College Tech Majors are Being Actively Recruited for Jobs. Here’s Why. /christian-college-tech-majors-are-being-actively-recruited-for-jobs-heres-why/ Fri, 22 May 2020 13:34:34 +0000 /?p=39788 Michael Sabal, faculty member for technology majors at 91łÔąĎ, shares the skills that you should be sharpening (and that future employers are looking for!) if you’re pursuing a career in technology.Ěý
I received a phone call from a local cybersecurity company last year looking specifically for graduates from Christian universities. When I asked why they were targeting our demographic for recruitment, they cited higher levels of professionalism and integrity than is typically found in graduates from secular institutions.ĚýĚý
That may surprise you. When students are preparing for a college education in technology, their main concern is whether that degree will help them land a job. While it’s true that a computer science degree from M.I.T. carries more weight in industry than a similar degree from other institutions, many companies are looking for more than just academic credentials.Ěý
Interviews for high profile technology companies show that they are looking for individuals who can balance their interest in technology with these softer skills:
Integrity: A number of agencies have been working together over the past few years to offer research grants to universities to figure out how to incorporate higher standards of ethics into technology education. But at a Christian university, that emphasis of ethics and integrity comes standard. Bible and theology courses will help you grow in your faith, and your tech courses will also help you integrate your faith into your work. In these courses, you will regularly discuss the importance of giving due credit, how God gives you peace when facing difficult tasks, having a servant’s heart when assisting others, and what it means to approach every job with a desire for excellence.
Creativity: We recognize God is a creator, and He has created us in His likeness. The world often refers to technology as science, and in many ways it is. But designing programs, systems, and interfaces is as much of a craft and an art, having more in common with music and literature than with physics. Many of the highlights of computing technology history, such as punched cards, got their start in the textile industry. Even today, wearable technology (like an Apple watch) integrates form with function. At 91łÔąĎ, many of our courses use game development to help you focus your learning in creative ways.
Human Relations: God did not create us for isolation; we were designed for fellowship.Ěý Learning, product development, and business all improve when significant social interaction is included. While most of your education will require individual work, technology courses at 91łÔąĎ emphasize the importance of working collectively. Many of the courses include a heavy emphasis on completing projects that are shown to peers for feedback. While professionalism is part of many curricula, our biblical background helps us to respect every person as part of God’s creation, also made in His likeness.
Recruiters for tech companies are actively looking for Christian college graduates. The question is, will you be one of them? At 91łÔąĎ, students interested in technology can major in computer science, cybersecurity, information systems. In any one of these majors, students can also enroll in a dual-level program to earn both a bachelor’s and an MBA in just five years. Download the eBook below or apply today to get started.
